Learners will be staying in Girton College, Cambridge, one of the 31 colleges of the University. This is where the Programme Director, Laura Davies, herself studied as an Undergraduate. Girton is a beautiful college, set amongst 50 acres of parkland and gardens just outside the centre of Cambridge (about 10 minutes to the city centre/Kings College by bus).

Girton College has major historic significance as it was founded in 1869 during the movement for women’s suffrage in the UK, by Lady Stanley, Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon, as Britain’s first residential college for women offering an education at degree level.

The founders’ vision was:

Everything good for the body, soul and spirit.

Founder Emily Davies

Today, Girton still strongly supports these principles and is a thriving college for University men and women.

Girton College has beautiful architecture, excellent catering and large grounds and excellent facilities which are all available for our students to use for BBQs, garden parties, treasure hunts and sporting activities. This means that apart from excursions, all the lessons and activities can be delivered by our staff on site, including a wide variety of sports such as rugby, football, cricket, swimming and tennis, as well as traditional games such as croquet on the college lawn.

Cambridge Dream’s founder, Laura Davies, chose Girton for the summer school because it is more suited to this type of programme than the busy city centre colleges where students’ access to facilities is limited in the summer, so they feel more like tourists than actual students.

We believe full immersion in British culture includes experiencing good local food and learning about dining and social etiquette. Girton College provides award-winning, top quality food using locally sourced ingredients with several hot and cold choices for every meal, including a full English breakfast every morning. A formal four course silver service dinner is arranged in the college’s Great Hall at the end of the programme before the official award ceremony. For smaller groups, we are privileged to be permitted to use the beautiful Fellows’ Dining Room.
